< Services Tech serve volunteers Chuck Mancebo, Grady Williams, and Dean Wyatt, went on an exciting trip in March. The group installed a digital radio email system for World Concern Africa. The computer based Post Office was installed in Nairobi, Kenya, where there was access to the Internet. H.F. Radio units with E-Mail capability were installed in the Ugandan homes and vehicles of Dr. Val Shean in Soroti and Dr. Jean Grade' in Moroto. Dr. Jean Grade' who lives in a thatched roof mud hut in Moroto says "My work takes me to remote areas that can often be dangerous and far away from medical help. A reliable radio in the vehicle gives me voice contact to other missionaries, pilots and hospitals and provides radio email. As usual the team was blessed beyond belief...having the satisfaction of knowing that by providing the much needed communication capability, God's servants can operate more safely in remote and sometimes dangerous locations.
The World Concern Africa system installed in Nairobi is the third system now being hosted by Techserve. In 1998 Grady and Chuck installed a radio email system for Christian & Missionary Alliance, (CMA) in Gabon. The Postoffice was located in Libreville with three remote access radio units in Bongolo, 20 miles from the Congo Border. Staff of the Evangeline Hospital then had same or next day turn around on email instead of the postal mail which required three weeks to three months for a response. What a blessing. Also in !998 Grady assisted Mike Scott of World Team Cameroon (WTC) in setting up radio E-mail system in Cameroon. Both the CMA & WTC systems were established on a technology used by Radio Amateurs. Due to a new Winlink 2000 network developed for the worldwide amateur community, the older amateur system still in use by the missionary groups is being discontinued. Newly developed software made it possible to establish the Missionary Radio Email system now hosted by Techserve. Grady & Chuck have assisted numerous missionaries who are hams in setting up radio email in addition to establishing systems for non-ham missionary groups. If you know of any missionary or mission group who needs help with amateur (ham) or non-amateur systems please contact:
